Diarrhea is a common symptom in dogs. Mostly bowel syndrome ejected when dogs eat things that should not be eaten. But sometimes diarrhea is a sign of more serious diseases such as Carré and Parvovirus.

Some causes of common diarrhea  such as stress, sudden change of food, too much food leftovers ...cause severe diarrhea but the dogs can recover quickly.

Adult dogs have diarrhea sometimes  can bet food; they empty stomach for 12-24 hours, the instestine have time to rest and the inflammation has enough healing time. If the dog seems to be drowsy, lethargic or fatigue while fasting, you can give it glucose solution or apply honey on their gums and bring the dog to the veterinary clinic immediately.

One of the serious problems of diarrhea is dehydration. Dehydration is  draining from the body, often including loss of both water and electrolytes and minerals. Due to the water loss in stools and dogs go without food or drink. Fever also increases water loss. The disease becomes serious if the dog does not drink enough water to compensate for the loss. Other causes of dehydration are dog’s vomit and diarrhea. When dehydrated, the skin will have undulating ripples. Other signs are dry mouth, sunken eyes, collapse and possible death.


Rapid rehydration: By oral electrolyte solution C-electrolytes  for dogs to drink or not to drink, electrolyte solutions for use in the bottle or syringe (without the needle) injected into the dog's cheek. Use 1 - 2 ml / kg body weight / hour depending on more or less dehydration. If diarrhea is accompanied by vomiting, the administration will do more to stimulate the dog to vomit more, so the dog has to be infused.

* Antibiotics can be chosen:

+ Colamp: 1ml / 5kg body weight combined Metronidazone: 1 ml / 2 kg of body weight
+ Or Vimefloro FDP: 1ml / 5kg body weight combined Septryl 240: 1 ml / 10 kg body weight
+ Or Vime-Sone: 1 ml / 5 kg body weight

* Treatment of symptoms: Atropine 1 ml / 5 kg body weight; B6 1 ml / 5 kg body weight (when vomiting); Vitamin K 1 ml / 5 kg body weight (somtimes there is blood, diarrhea, blood with vomitting); Phosphagel (mucous diarrhea)

* Infusion: 10-20 ml / kg body weight / day: 0.9% NaCl 30%; Ringer's lactate 50%; Glucose 5% 20%
Added to the infusion:

+ Glucose 30% (if the dog was hypoglycemic)

+ For dogs’ quickly recovery, added: Aminovit 1ml / 7 - 10 kg body weight; Vimekat 1 ml / 5 kg body weight; Canlamin: 1 ml / 5 kg body weight

Additional sodium bicarbonate + 1.4% (if the dog get blood ketones)

Care after illness

There should be 3-5 days for dogs to return to normal meal diet with small, frequent meals (3-5 times / day) with easy to digest foods. If diarrhea stops, increased the amount of food / meals, reducing the number of meals to 1-2 meals / day. Then gradually add other foods to bring back the meals like they were before the illness.
